The Special Operations Trainer Phenomenon

Yesterday I watched an interview with Rob Roy, who wrote a book called "The Navy SEAL Art of War" and runs a training camp "SOT-G" offering leadership development for CEOs and other business leaders through lessons from Navy SEAL training and experience.

I've noticed in the last few years individuals using their specops credentials have increased in number, such as SEALfit and books like "Way of the SEAL", also the GoRUCK training events founded by special forces to name a few more.

It seems like today, anything SEAL or specops related is regarded as the gold standard for leadership, fitness, and business, but again it seems like a recent phenomenon. Were there books like "Lead like a soldier/marine" in the 80s/90s? I'm not sure, and I'm not knocking the SEALs or saying whether these books/programs are good or bad. In fact, many of the books have received glowing reviews and may provide readers insight or tools to improve their lives. But I wanted to gauge opinions here and ask whether these programs are modern offshoots of marathons and ironman competitions for people to test their limits and find out what they're made of. Or maybe its a chance to emulate our nation's heroes and get a taste of what it's like to be a specops warrior?

It seems to be that these programs have seem to be gaining popularity since May 1st 2011 with the reveal of SEAL Team 6 with OBL. Of course that could be just speculation on my part, special operations have been featured in many movies and tv shows prior to that day, but I'm not sure if the audience for these training programs was as large.
