Can't copy Video disk - no files but plays fine. WTF?

A customer brought in several part-full mini-DVDs of home movies taken with a Sony Handycam Model DCR-DVD755E, which they wanted transferred onto a standard DVD. All the discs (except the troublesome one, see item 3 below) have been finalized (I have checked this using the customer's own Handycam).

The copy method I use is to copy each disk into its own folder in my HDD, and then use Nero to transcode all the VOB files onto a new DVD. In every case but one, when I insert the disk in the computer, they come up in My Computer and will play. I can explore the disk and the video disk structure ( Video_TS folder contains VOB files, BUP files and IFO files as normal.)

However, there is one disk which does not contain any files at all. Right click > Explore brings up an empty DVD window, but if I double click on the disk icon in My Computer and select "Nero Showtime", it plays the video on the disk. WTF? There must be files on the disk, so why can I not see them?

A few additional things I have tried so far

1. The disk plays OK in my standalone DVD player

2. The disk plays OK in My Panasonic HDD-DVD, but it won't copy to the HDD. Keeps saying "the source disk is invalid" even though it plays fine.

3. The disk wont play back in the Sony Handicam even though it was created on it. (It when through the finalizing procedure OK, too about 2 min). It says the disk is in an unsupported format.

4. Copying the disk using Nero. It appears to complete the task, but the copy has no files/structure and doesn't work at all.

(I can probably try playing back from my Standalone DVD player through the AV inputs of the HDD-DVD, and then burn a disk that way. Its a workaround rather than a solution)

I have never struck this before. Anyone have an idea what it going on here? Suggestions?
