In Scientific American for April 2015 there is a news article called The Persistence of Memory by Roni Jacobson. Unfortunately it is behind a pay wall, but it says that new research by David Glanzman of the UCLA has shown that even after synapses have been zapped, new synapses can be formed by old memories. this could mean that memory is stored inside the cell in some way.
The bad news of this is that it is probably not possible to eliminate traumatic memories through medicine, and the good news is that perhaps Alzheimer patients can one day have their memories restored after stopping the disease.
