When I was a teenager I read George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia in which he told us what was so obvious; that we should go and fight against the fascists trying to take over Spain. We should have fought with the republicans, the liberals, the anarchists and the communists who were trying to make a better world for themselves.
These days we look back on that time as one in which the fighters of the International Brigades and the Abraham Lincoln Brigades - volunteers - as though they were unmitigated heroes and we cannot even imagine why others would have let Franco with his Nazi help take over.
Today, those of us who ingested Hitchens and the stories of the courage of the Kurds and their liberalism compared to the rest of the Middle East can only watch as butchers and barbarians stream up to Kurdish villages to massacre them.
What are we going to do about it?
Let me first tell you what I am going to do about it.
I am going to do nothing.
Why am I going to do nothing?
However, there is still something that tells me that if I had ingested all these Orwell books and simple moral principles when I was young, it is inexcusable for me not to go and fight for the Kurds.
I simply put this out there so that those who think there is a very simple moral argument here can explain how they resolved my own moral conflict.
