Terrorism in Canada

Busy few days here in the Great White North.

On Monday, a recent convert to Islam carried out a hit and run with his car against two members of the Canadian Forces in a shopping mall parking lot, killing one and injuring the other. The killer had gotten onto the RCMP watch list for his online postings and also for his attempt to get to Turkey (presumably to join up with ISIS in Syria).

And only this morning - at least two, possibly 3 persons have been involved in an incident in the National Capital. A shooter shot a member of the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa doing sentry duty at the National War Memorial. The shooter then got into a car and drove the 3-400m to Parliament Hill where they debussed and went into Centre Block. Apparently the Sgt at Arms shot and killed one of the gunmen, a second shooter has been taken out, and the local police, RCMP and DND are doing a cordon and search of the Hill and area to look for third person of interest.

I'll be honest, my wife is rather distraught at this point and my building is in "lock down" at the moment.

This does represent a dramatic shift for Canada, while there have been a number of incidents of terrorist plots stopped before they actually could have been carried out in the last few years, this really is the first terrorist incident in Canada since the Oka Crisis in 1990, or the FLQ Crisis in 1970.

In the proper spirit of "keeping calm and carrying on" the "Battle of Ontario" (a hockey game between the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs) hasn't been cancelled as of 12:15PM
