Discussion of “Thug”. Free speech? Racism? Dog-Whistle?

With limited approval by the PTB (see Questions thread in Forum Management), if it is limited to this thread and does not go meandering around the other threads and sub-forums like Shia LeBeouf at Cabaret (or in any interview he’s given on the topic), here is where we can discuss (hopefully, discuss rationally) whether the term “thug” is:

 A convenient (e.g. dog whistle) substitute for the N-word.

 An innocent term that has a historical meaning and thus totally inoffensive.

 An example of post-modernist political correctness trotted out by SJWs because they have no other argument

 A handy tool used by trollish posters to rile people up because it’s more fun to get an “Is Too! / Is Not!” squabble going than it is to actually take the trouble to read what the other poster is saying.

Those are not the only options. I’m quite certain that with the creative bent of a number of pedantic posters, we’ll have any number of criticisms that the options aren’t sufficient. That’s why there is no poll. Bring your arguments to the table. I’m just the sacrificial lamb who is making the OP. It’s not my thread… it’s yours. Everyone has a lot to say on the topic in various AAH threads. Here’s your chance to state your piece and not have it bundled off to NeverNeverLand.

My opinion? Who cares, right? You guys know all the answers. But for what it’s worth I think it’s a combination of N-word substitute and trollish device.
