Comet Brushes Close to Mars - 2014 OCT 19

The centers of Comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) and Mars will approach each other by 132,153 km on 2014 OCT 19 at 13:45:07 CDT (18:45:08 U7), after light time for the images to reach Earth is taken into account. That’s about a third of the distance between the Earth and Moon. This is based on orbital data from Solex.

When the comet was discovered nearly two years ago, a collision with Mars was considered a possibility within the margin of error. Later observations provided evidence that a collision will not occur.

At the time the pair becomes closest spatially, the comet’s brightness is expected to be at magnitude +10.1. They will be near the Scorpius-Sagittarius border. Below are their predicted coordinates of date (not 2000.0) at the time of apparent closest spatial approach to each other according to Solex.

I’ve created three graphics for the event: An overhead view from north of the solar system, an equatorial chart and a comet ephemeris. They can be viewed at http://ift.tt/1y43jpI

Photos and descriptions of the event would be welcome additions to this thread.
