Can fever be a medical treatment?

We develop fever as part of our body's efforts to fight infection. Is fever ever induced artificially -- by medication, electric blanket, heat lamps etc. -- to help the body fight infection? Fever is apparently one of the first symptoms of Ebola, and also of a lot of routine illnesses like the flu. Suppose at the first sign of illness -- or even exposure, in the case of Ebola -- body temperature was pumped up by a few degrees (to 102? 103?) and maintained there for an extended period of time, with fluid replacement and other supportive care? Could that reduce the development of disease, or would it just add stress to an already weakened patient?
