Before I go any further please understand this was some sort of terrestrial aircraft. I know because I heard it once it flew over my location
To the story
Last night I was observing with my telescope in a field in a very rural area. On the horizon I saw a light flashing which appeared to be zigzagging a few degrees back and forth. I continued to watch the object for a minute or two trying to define how erratic the objects course was as referenced by background stars.
Very quickly it was obvious the object was not zigzagging at all but my mind was still perceiving the motion. The planes running lights were a little unusual. A very bright white on the left (as viewed by me) a green light on the centerline and a red light on the right.
Clearly the white light flashing was confusing my perception, (Especially as the plane was flying directly towards me), but I found it interesting how much my encounter resembled reports of objects moving erratically in the night sky.
So this got me wondering, is this kind of perception issue known by any specific name, is there any scientific explanation for how my mind was miss representing the data
