My C: drive - WTH?

WTH just happened?

Some (possibly totally-unrelated) background:

=====[ 1. RUNNING LOW ON DISK SPACE ON DRIVE C: ]=====

Over the past several weeks, I have been receiving "Running low on disk space on drive C:" messages. The 60gig drive would be down to maybe 150meg of available space. Running the cleanup tool rarely listed more than 1 or 2 megs worth of stuff to clean up. I would uninstall some programs or, or frequently, would cut/paste some artists' folders from my iTunes music folder on C: to a tempmusic folder I'd created on my D: drive until I had enough space available on C:

Then, a day or two later, I would have to do it all over again, even though I couldn't recall having done anything which would have used up all of the space I'd cleared two days before.

=====[ 2. WHERE HAS ALL THE MUSIC GONE? ]=====

Two nights ago, after getting the "Low on disk space on drive C:" message yet again, I went into my itunes music folder on C: to see which artists' folders I would cut/paste to D: this time, BUT THERE WAS NOTHING IN IT!! Easily more than a hundred artists' folders, and the gigs and gigs of dat they held - gone!! Oh well,I still had all of the CDs...

=====[ 3. OH WELL, AT LEAST I HAVE SPACE ON DRIVE C: NOW ]=====

This morning, when I powered on my laptop, it gave the usual Loading Windows" message but, insteadof the little animation where the red, yellow, blue and green lights swoop around until they form in Windows logo, I got... nothing. After ten minutes of nothing, I powered off, waited a bit and powered on again. After eventually getting to a diagnostic message of "No OS files found", I made my way to the command line, went to C:, did a DIR, and my entire C: drive was wiped clean!!

=====[ 4. AND NOW... A MIRACLE ]=====

After rebooting two or three times with the same results, I went to the dining room and had some breakfast, after which I returned to my laptop and powered it off and on, upon which I saw the Windows password prompt for the first time this morning!

I keyed in my password, and Windows loaded just fine. Everything is back on my C: drive (except there are sill no artists' foldes in my iTunes music folder).

I've had McAfee's Antivirus running in the background throughout all of this, but it never reported anything. I am running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware's "Threat Scan" right now. It has found 124 "Detected objects in the 41 minutes it has been running so far (the progress bar looks to be about 10% complete).

Any thoughts or suggestions about any of the above?

Thanks,

-RSL
