I’m looking for a single example of evolution that is confirmed by all the major types of evidence for evolution that I can present in a non-technical way for the lay person, in perhaps one or two pages that I could put together.
I want to use this when religious people deny evolution at the atheist booth I help staff at our local farmers’ market. Consider this an exercise in street science-education. I want to be able to say to evolution deniers, “Here is just a single example of evolution, beyond your ‘micro-evolution,’ that is irrefutable because it is confirmed through multiple, independent lines of evidence that would fall apart if it didn’t all fit together.”
First, here’s a list of the following major types of evidence for evolution:
Radiometric dating
Stratigraphy
Genetics
Biogeography
Homology
(have I missed any?)
Next, take the example of the evolution of the bones of the jaw and ear of reptiles into the bones of the mammalian jaw and ear. This would be a good example for me if we actually have, in the scientific literature,
• stratigraphic dating of reptile, intermediates, and mammal fossils
• radiometric dating of reptile, intermediates, and mammal fossils
• identification of the genes that mutated
• a geographic distribution of fossils that would allow for the evolution of one into the other
• identification of the form and function of reptile jaw and ear bones as they transition into intermediates and mammal jaw and ear bones
This would be a good example as well if I can (1) have a few good graphics to visually illustrate the idea, like this one:
and (2) at least one good citation in the scientific literature, or maybe a textbook, for each of the major types of evidence, just for reference.
Are there better examples than the reptile to mammal jaw and ear bone? Where can I find citations in the literature? What about illustrating the other types of evidence besides homology? Any other suggestions?
