Grammar question in science?

When a physicist writes a sentence like "We want the square of 9", does it always mean "square root" and not 9 squared? No, that is not a silly question. The line I read said just that: We want the square of 9. My first thought was 81 but I soon realized the writer was talking about the square root of 9. That made me wonder how, in physicists make sure to distinguish between the two so that readers are not misled. There must be a proper way. I imagine this kind of question comes up often in a technical field - saying something so it is not misinterpreted. Please clarify.
