Security question about sharing my information with Coursera

I'm currently doing a course with Coursera.

Coursera is a co-operation of several universities (MIT among them) that offer free courses on wide range of subjects.

At the end of the course, there is the opportunity to get a certificate. But for this on-line educational organisation to minimize fraud, they want a lot of info from applicants.

They make a "signature" where they track they way you type and add that to your profile.

And a photograph of the applicant

And a scan/photo of a valid ID

+ the usual stuff (address, email address etc)

I was going to apply until it occurred to me that this combination of info is pretty much a perfect identity-theft storm.

If ever Coursera get's hacked, some Russian hacker will blow my life savings in a Moscow strip-club and then proceed to buy a house in my name in central London.

What are the thoughts of sages of this sub-forum?

Am I being really paranoid? Or is it really better to avoid doing this and convince prospective employers of my qualities with my charm and good looks?
