George H. W. Bush Honored for Political Bravery

Well, I guess if you live long enough, then you see everything …

I just wanted to mention that former President George H. W. Bush who famously said ‘Read my lips. No new taxes!’ at the 1988 Republican convention, then in the 1992 Republican convention stated that “I only raised taxes one time and that I regret doing so’, and then went on to say that ‘Bill Clinton raised taxes hundreds of times and enjoyed doing so’ has been honored for his political bravery by raising taxes in 1990.

This was held up as an example of putting the welfare of the nation ahead of the welfare of one’s political party. And while I am sure that Bush feels good about this event, however I find rather strange since I have always expected the president to put his nation before his party. Or put another way, I expect to promise to:

“… solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.’’

I am sure that when I visited the National Archives many years ago that I saw this exact phrase written down somewhere or another.

Anyway, the full story is available at:
