iPhone 6 Rumours

Despite likely not being released until September this year (if Apple follow their usual product cycle) the iPhone 6 rumour mill is already in overdrive, with alleged (but faked) leaked photos of the prototype screen being circulated as early as January.

Speculation is ranging from the bizarre to the plausible, as usual, and all the latest (fairly sensible) rumours can be found here:

The rumours that refuse to die and receive most circulation mainly concern screen size. The general consensus is that Apple will release two devices, one with a 4.7" screen, and a 5.5" screen iPhablet. Apart from last year, Apple usually only release one device, and often have trouble meeting demand, so I'd be surprised if they released two such differing devices. Also, a 4.7" screen is just about the upper limit for a device I can use comfortably with one hand, and fit comfortably in a pocket, so I hope they stick to their one-handed use design philosophy. I also have no need for a phablet, so that rumour isn't very exciting.

Still on the subject of screens, another persistent rumour is that the screen will be made entirely of sapphire glass (like the camera lens and fingerprint scanner on the 5S). While this glass is insanely strong and supposedly virtually unscratchable, I'd be concerned about what this would mean for the price of the phone.

The camera is also rumoured to be getting an update - as is usual - with rumours that it will stay at 8MP, or increase to anywhere from 10 to 16 MP, but most seem to agree that Apple will tweak the sensor for better quality. Apple realise that picture quality isn't necessarily dependent on the number of MPs, and despite the 5S 'only' being an 8MP camera, the sensor ensures it is still one of the best in class, in terms of quality. I'll be interested to see if Apple react to pressure from competitors who go for sheer numbers and on-paper stats, and up the MP count. As far as I'm concerned, sheer number of MPs isn't an issue, but a bump up wouldn't be unwelcome.

Essentially, there have been a few strong challengers to the iPhone recently, but it still holds its place as the number one selling smartphone worldwide, so as far as the iPhone 6 goes, that title is still Apple's to lose.

What would you like to see in the iPhone 6?
