Windows Explorer, Firefox run slow, games work fine

So basically, my problem is that both Mozilla Firefox and Windows (both features of the OS itself, like the task bar, and the Windows Explorer software used to browse and move files) are incredibly slow and "choppy" and frequently lock up, sometimes for minutes at a time. They work as they should, but I'm always pretty much just waiting for them to start acting up.

Games, however, run just fine, in fact, I can run even memory-intensive games like Europa Universalis 4 and Hearts of Iron III without any issues at all.

Any idea what might be causing this? I've run virus checks using Avast! and Ad-Aware, and I've run Spybot Search and Destroy. Any computer savvy people here have an idea what the problem might be, or at least where to go from here?

If it helps, I'm running Windows 7, and I've got 4 GB of RAM and a dual 1.6 GHZ AMD E-450 processor. The problems I'm experiencing are mostly recent.
