Nuclear Fusion: Still 20 years away, or finally moving closer?

In news today -

NIF researchers reportedly discovered that for the first time, the experiment produced a fusion reaction in which the process of compressing and heating a hydrogen fuel pellet led to more energy being released than absorbed into the pellet.

From what I understand, due to inefficiencies in the whole process it's still taking more energy to get going than it outputs, but the actual energy in to the pellets is now less than the energy they're outputting.

Sounds like a major step forward, but experts on JREF are usually pretty good at putting the dampers on expectations :D
