I recently donated blood, and I was wondering if the body adapts to frequent blood donation(a pint about every 2 months) in a manner similar to how the body adapts to exercise or other challenges.
In particular, I wonder if the body replenishes its red blood cell(RBC) supply more quickly if it loses a significant portion of them every few months through donation, assuming the body gets enough iron, protein and all the other necessary nutrients. On average, it can take 4 to 8 weeks for the RBC count to return to normal.
On a related note, do athletes rebuild their blood(in particular red blood cells) more quickly than non-athletes?
I'm curious because I am considering donating more often, but I am one of those people who can feel the difference for a few days after donating since I am very skinny and almost don't meet the weight qualifications.
