Just bought a new iMac. Not here yet, but I'll be a mass of different cables and connections. USB 2.0; USB 3.0; FireWire 800; FireWire 400; Thunderbolt.
Hooray!
I can buy various converters. This begs the question, what goes on inside those converting cables? Do they just link input pin 1 with output pin 4 and so forth, which begs the further question as to how the computer or the peripheral copes with having the 'wrong' kind of connection or do the converters contain electronics to covert one standard to another?
And finally, the important thing, can I expect converters to work reliably? I think USB 2.0 to 3.0 and Thunderbolt to FireWire are likely to be what I need to get involved with.
Thanks
