Anxiety at work

Not sure whether to start this thread here or community. Let’s see how it goes.

I’ve been working for over 50 years and have been very resilient in many demanding jobs. At times I’ve been responsible for over 100 staff and multi million dollar budgets. In the 1980s I experienced a panic attack on a train into work which led to a few weeks off. Got over it pretty well.

But in recent months I’ve been feeling physically sick at work.

I can afford to retire now at 68, but don’t want to for a few reasons. It’s something to do; with no mortgage and no kids at home, we are financially well off; and, until recently, I’ve been enjoying my job.

My manager is hopeless, but I’ve learnt to cope with this. The main problem is that we have been waiting for the result of a government tender which will determine if we stay or go. About 200 jobs are at stake, including my daughter’s. A decision has been postponed three times now. Each postponement has been a kick in the guts. We should get the result in two months time. My problem is getting through these two months.

So for the first time in my life I’ve sought help coping with work. My doctor gave me time off and prescribed anti depressants. But it was the psychologist who helped most. To its credit, my company has funded this psychological support.

Just having someone to talk to who won’t judge you was great. She gave me great practical advice which I’m following. It’s still going to be tough getting through the next two months, but at least I have a plan and some support.

So if any of you are experiencing work anxiety, ask for help. It’s out there.
