Student Chokes, Dies Following Pancake Eating Contest

It seems so absurd as to be funny in a very dark way yet a young woman lost her life and that's not funny.

A student at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., died Sunday after she apparently choked during a pancake-eating contest Thursday night at the college, according to a Facebook post from SHU. The student had eaten four or five pancakes in the contest, held at a Greek Life dinner on the college’s University Commons, when she began to shake and fell to the floor, according to the Fairfield Citizen. She spit out pancake but was still choking, the Citizen said. A nursing student began CPR, while others attempted to use the Heimlich maneuver and began pulling food from her throat, the Fairfield Citizen said. News link

Her fellow students were very upset and held a candlelight vigil for her. The college president said in a statement: "No parent should ever have to receive news like this."
