Left Mouse Button Dead

I have a Microsoft Wired Optical mouse of an indeterminate age. A German colleague gave it to me about 5 years ago when my last Microsoft Wired Optical mouse gave up the ghost after about 10 years. It's marked as PS/2 (and by that I presume IBM PS/2 as opposed to Playstation) compatible so it no doubt has some significant age. About an hour ago the left mouse button stopped working.

I've taken the mouse apart and even pressing the actuator directly on the PCB (which clicks but does nothing) doesn't make the left mouse button work.

I've ordered a new Wired Optical mouse which will arrive tomorrow but I doubt whether it'll be anything like as robust. In the meantime I've set the right button to be the main button and I'm using it awkwardly.

Is there any trick that I've missed or do I just have to accept that it's gone to the great cheese shop in the sky ?
