What show did you see recently?

The Merchant of Venice. This adaptation, one of four this season by a company which has put on shows for a number of years in the leafy surroundings of Glasgow Botanic Gardens, a park in the city's west end.

Cast of ten, so some actors playing more than one part. Minimal staging, scenery and props. Actors in 1920s dress and some short musical interludes from the same era added to enhance the feel of that age, but otherwise accurate to the text (as far as I could tell).

For a controversial play, I thought Shylock portrayed as sympathetically as possible given the material. Got the feeling, Jew or no, he wouldn't have been a particularly likeable guy. The unsavoury aspects of other characters were also well demonstrated, Bassanio's wastrel habits, Portia's self-righteousness.

A good effort, particularly given the sub-optimum weather conditions at the moment (it was a toss-up whether poor Antonio would freeze to death before Shylock got the chance to carve him up).
