The Science of Mars Colonisation: The Game

If have had an idea for a computer game based on the colonization/terraforming of Mars since sometime in high school (back in the 90s).

I finally have a legitimate reason to pursue this as I am currently working on my PHD, and part of the work will be the development of an educational game.

The educational component of the game will be teaching Object Oriented Programming techniques, such as Inheritance, Encapsulation and Polymorphism.

The idea is to have the player design Robots using these principles to accomplish a series of tasks.

The overall idea is for these tasks to take place within the context of Martian (or a Mars-like planet) Colonization, essentially focusing on the tasks that would be required for a group of robots to build a base that later human colonists will be able to use.

So my purpose for this thread is to pick the brains of the many experts on ISF on the scientific and engineering issues related to Martian Colonization. Furthermore I hope that this will encourage discussions about space colonization which I know is one of the hot topics on ISF.

Some caveats/points before I get into my questions:

- Yes I know about RoboCraft. I am studiously avoiding too much information from that game to not cloud my own game with ideas from it.
- I'm pretty flexible in terms of how realistic the game needs to be. While more realism would be preferred, the key factor is creating an environment within which these Robots need to perform their tasks.

ETA: This thread is about the scientific aspects of colonisation so I'm hoping this is the right forum.
