a first world war "ufo"

A trend among UFO cranks is to disparage the idea that the planet Venus is responsible for a great many UFO sightings. Often they will claim that Venus would not suffice in their pet case because the witness was a astronomer/pilot etc and would not make that mistake.

Christmas 1914,the Cuxhaven raid(often called the first carrier strike,it isn't that honour belongs to the Japanese a short time before)over 100 ships and submarines escort several seaplane carriers close to German shores.
Just before the aircraft are dispatched a light appears glowing brightly dead ahead(this was in early morning),the first reaction both on the carriers and escorts was bewilderment at what looked like a balloon on fire. When the light continued to rise that idea was abandoned for the idea it was a Zeppelin fitted with a huge searchlight which for some reason it had on despite daylights arrival.
Finally a navigation officer on the bridge of HMS Arethusa worked it out,it was a star.

Actually all those ideas were wrong as reference to charts and meteorological data on the bridge of Arethusa finally showed-it was the planet Venus.:boxedin:

The royal navy's navigational training in the early 20th century had a extensive astronomical element. This added to the number of years-in many cases decades-of first hand experience of astronomical and meteorological observations many of the witnesses had mixed with the fact they needed charts to finally work it out shows the planet Venus can fool scores of trained, calm, experienced observers easily.
