"Doctors told me I'd never walk again!"

After hearing that phrase for the sixty-trillionth time on TV this morning, I started wondering if doctor really toss that phrase around that casually when talking to patients whose spinal cord hasn't even been severed. My BS meter tells me "No, they friggin' don't", but I'd still like to hear from actual doctors, or from people who interract with doctors on a regular basis. Is that cliché just as baseless as I believe it to be?
