Should there be a separate military justice system?

Up until very recently it was a simple fact of life that the military maintained a separte justice system from that of the country. The logic behind doing so meant that trials for various offences could be dealt with swiftly, for the preservation of military discipline. However, the means that make it swift can also lead to serious questions of the underlying fairness of the system.

Are the old arguments behind the maintenance of a separate system still valid, and if not, should the whole system be scrapped, or can it be reformed?
