Warning rants follow.....
Tragically, what I've dreaded for some time now happened and my previous laptop with beloved Win 7 died on me, forcing a new (and quick) PC buy. So I bought a new laptop which of course has Win 8.1...
I hate this freaking OS with the passion of a thousand suns. GOD it sucks. First it took forever just to boot up the first time (and is slow booting in general), then had to deal with that annoying "tablet" shell...which the sales rep said np, you just click the Windows button to get to the desktop....which works....sometimes. It's also noticeably slower, so not buying the "Win 8.X is really just Win 7 with a new shell" bit.
Also Chrome for reasons I've yet to understand goes to this (basically) blank screen after I installed it and now I can't get back to the normal-looking desktop mode. Operator error? I don't think so, but maybe...regardless, I never had such "operator errors" with Win 7.
And what's w/these idiotic big arrows all but insisting I click on the upper-left or upper-right corners of the screen? eff off!
Also at one point after installing AVG it hung on me....but "close window" and even "End Task" in Task Mgr would not kill it; I had to reboot. Again, never once did that happen in Win 7.
This doesn't even take into account the loss of the start menu and an easily accessible list of ALL my programs at the click of a button.....of course, that made sense and people were used to it, so it's no wonder MS got rid of it.
And on it goes. What a load of cow dung. Anyone else want to join me in a vigilante raid on MS to burn the place down? This is enough to drive me to a Mac!
Edit: I found the older thread with the link to Win 7-style shells. I thank you, thank you again, and bow in your general direction. :) I don't expect it to resolve everything, but it's a nice start.
