Please allow me to oversimplify and tell me if I am basically right even if there are qualifications.
When someone asks "what do physicists do?" can we say physicists apply the math? I am thinking of fields like astronomy or geology and any other. An astronomer makes a discovery in space and has a theory as to what he has seen and perhaps some cause and effect theories. A physicist - probably an astrophysicist - steps in with data, formulae, etc., to prove, disprove or leave open for (heated?) debate the theories that pop up in scientific journals and discussions.
So, can we just say that physicists "apply the math"?
