This is a question relating to the current prosecution of Fred the Weather Man.

Of the other counts I have no comment - let's see what the jury decide. It was this last count that caught my eye however. It would appear that he is being charged on this count for having anal sex with someone under the age of 21. Now if so, whilst that was a crime in 1983, it is no longer a crime today. I would have though that you can't be charged with something that is no longer a crime. Or can you?
Quote:
He appeared in court in March to deny those 10 offences, which were alleged to have been committed between 25 October 1968 and 2 August 1983. Four of those alleged victims attended Altrincham Grammar School for Boys and one was at Elgin High in Newcastle upon Tyne. The first six of the 10 charges relate to indecent assaults on one complainant, a boy aged under 16 at the time; they include alleged offences of masturbation, oral sex and digital penetration, all taking place between 25 October 1969 and 24 October 1970. The remaining charges are: an allegation of indecent assault, by masturbation, on a male under 16, between 1 January 1975 and 31 December 1976; the same offence against another male, also under 16, between the same dates; and indecent assault by sexual touching on a fourth complainant between 1 January 1977 and 31 December 1977. The final count, of buggery, is said to have occurred against the fifth complainant, aged under 21 at the time, on or around 2 August 1983. |
