Question about satanic paranoia in the 1980's.

I was born in 1985, so I don't know much about all the news coverage involving satanism, and child abuse, but I heard things got pretty over exaggerated, and most of the claims being made weren't true. The show "True Detective" got me thinking about this subject though, because the plot involves a woman's dead body being posed in a satanic ritualistic sort of way, and child sacrifice. It kind of reminded me of all allegations made in the 80's. I was wondering if anybody knew anything about it here, or if there was any truth to any of the allegations that were made back then.
