Frankly, I'm a bit confused. There was a recent study which failed to find statistical significance between SHS and lung cancer, which was a bit surprising but simple enough. There appears to be consensus that it can still exacerbate asthma and heart disease, but perhaps due to ethics or practicality issues (particularly in the case of things like SIDS), there seems to be a paucity of clinical trials substantiating this.
Basically, I'm not entirely sure how to evaluate data in the absence of clinical trials. I worry that I'm conflating correlation with causation.
