Is it possible to build an automobile engine that uses dried fruit as fuel?

Dried fruit is a good, compact source of energy for humans, so why not adapt it for automotive use? It might be difficult to develop such an engine, but it could have some advantages; for example, you could get your fuel at any market that sells dried fruit, and the exhaust would smell sweet! You could even make your own fuel with a fruit dehydrator! Can anyone give me a good reason why this is an impractical idea?
