'A slap in the face': Trump's ethanol waivers are sparking rebellion in farm country
I do not feel betrayed at all. In fact this is probably the portion of Trump’s agenda I support the most. See what Trump did was give waivers to small refineries and allow them to produce just fuel alone without the required mandate to blend their gasoline with ethanol from corn.
It was a smart move for obvious reasons. The main reason is that these odious mandates are not wanted by the vast majority of citizens of the United States. Gasohol has very low demand and wouldn’t even exist without this government interference in the marketplace anyway. People simply prefer real gasoline and in the States who allow real gas, even at a slightly higher price at the pump, real gasoline is preferred for a variety of reasons. There is literally no economic nor ecological benefit to producing ethanol from corn surpluses, other than to artificially boost prices on a commodity we arguably already have far too much of to begin with.
If I am annoyed, it is because he didn’t go far enough. Trump actually needs to completely remove this flawed corn ethanol mandate from BOTH small refineries and large refineries. While he is at it, he also needs to remove other regulatory capture and subsidies on all corn and soy, that includes feedlots and other confined animal husbandry operations (CAFOs) as well!
It's Time to Rethink America's Corn System - Scientific American
Now of course that along with the Chinese trade wars would really disrupt US agriculture. So we should use the savings of hundreds of billions we subsidize in the current system we have now, and use that money to help farmers convert to more sane systems that no longer need odious government interference to even exist. Preferably finally to some sane policy where farmers can make a decent profit without huge government welfare. There are many possibilities, including finally recognizing the benefits of restoring the great prairies and making our biofuels from grass and feeding our animals grass instead of the inefficient corn system, but that is for a different thread maybe. Although if you really are interested in discussing that too, we can.
If there is any betrayal, it is in not going far enough. But I support this action 100%. Give him props for doing the right thing even though it is not popular. This way he can continue and really reform agriculture!
