Was the death toll of the trail of tears really exaggerated?

First off this guy does an inverted appeal to motive: ie they didn’t mean to hurt anyone and such.
Second they rely on the work of one William R. Higginbotham who claims to have see documents proving it wasn’t so bad but gives no evidence. Any thoughts?
