The Paradise Theory of the Jesus Myth

Gday all :)

I tend to the view that Jesus Christ was a myth. A view I formed after decades of practice and study and research about him, eventually determining the mythical view to be the best explanation for the evidence. NOT because I'm an angry atheist trying to bring the church down :)

Both Dr Carrier and Earl Doherty foundered on WHERE they think Paul placed the non-earthly crucifixion of Jesus :
  • Doherty said 'the world of myth',
  • Dr Carrier claimed 'outer space'.

I say it happened in Paradise in the Third Heaven. Where Paul was lifted up to in his great OOBE. Recently I have also worked up several keys issues on how and why a heavenly being would later come to be seen as historical.

I present the Paradise Theory of the Jesus Myth. More of a hypothesis really, and we are testing it - I take the positive side of the argument. I look forward to polite and constructive criticism on this theory. GDon and I have already started on some of this.

It's not acceptable to post the whole thing here, so here is a quick summary of what makes my theory different to Doherty's or Dr Carrier's :
  • Jesus was crucified on the Tree of Life in Paradise in the Third Heaven - according to Paul.
  • The docetics' belief in a phantom Jesus is the direct consequence of the conflict between the early belief in a spiritual Jesus Christ, and the later details of the Gospels.
  • The historicisation of Jesus Christ was the natural result of the increasing historical detail of the phases in belief.
  • Distinct phases of growing Jesus Christ belief, gradually becoming historical :
  1. Before Paul - a purely spiritual heavenly being experienced only in visions,
  2. Paul's crucified and resurrected son-of-God - a spiritual being real to believers,
  3. The Gospel of Mark - religious or mythical literature, copied and spread and increasingly mis-understood as historical,
  4. A historical Jesus of Nazareth became the popular, and eventually the required belief.
On the specific issue of Paradise in the Third Heaven (Pi3T) :

Two books possibly known to Paul were - The Life of Adam (and Eve) aka The Book of Adam aka The Revelation of Moses; and 2 Enoch. Both books place Paradise in the Third Heaven. 2 Enoch also puts the Tree of Life in Paradise, a place that is 'between corruptibility and incorruptibility'. This Tree of Life is where the Lord rests when he 'goes up into Paradise', and it bears 'all fruits'. Yet the Third Heaven is also a 'very terrible place' with 'all manner of tortures' for the wicked.

Paul may have read about Pi3T in one of those books, or even heard it mentioned in prayer or something. Of course, I have only speculation on this, as Paul never spells out where it happened, but it seems a highly plausible, even likely location for a non-earthly crucifixion.
