So, I have seen on amazon that they are about to release "The Young Adult Adaptation" of Dan Brown's masterpiece "The Da Vince Code".
And I thought to myself, dear FSM, WHY?
No, I don't mean the obvious cynical answer. My reaction was because of the "Young Adult" part. Why the stupid choice of YA? What is needed to change to make it YA? The press release blurb from the publisher Random House states only "abridged". Well, as a Young Adult reader I would refuse to get thecensored abridged version when I could as easily (and legally) get the full version (only to learn that there's not much worth censoring in it). It reads like a YA story anyway, so why bother?
From where I stand, there are tons of options to fulfill the usual cynical answer (money) that do not have these problems. The fully illustrated version. The movie tie-in version. The movie's Director's Cut tie-in version. The Critical version, with footnotes where Dan Brown goes wrong (More footnotes than text! You'll get a book THAT much longer!!). Why stop a YA? Go fully down the Reduced to Essentials summary version road. Etc.
