Greater odds of life with large numbers of planets

Am I right in saying the odds of life arising elsewhere in the universe is independent of the number of earth like planets? Often it is argued that because there might be trillions of extra-solar earth like planets out there, that in itself increases the odds of life arising. My view is that we have only found life on one planet so far,and we don't know how many steps in what order are required for life to arise from inorganic material.
