Exxon/Mobil Speedpass reset

I have had an Exxon/Mobil Speedpass for several years now. Just in case you don't know what this is, it's an RFID dongle on my keychain that can be used at Exxon/Mobil gas pumps and other retail locations much like a credit card.

Sounds like a good idea -- pull up to the pump, swipe your Speedpass over the Pegasus symbol, and you're good to go for a fillup. But it doesn't work every time for me.

Typically, when the device is not recognized, I will go to a different pump, or pay after pumping inside the store, where the Speedpass is more reliable. But recently it was rejected that way also, and I ended up paying cash.

My account is all paid up, so that's not the problem, and this phenomenon is happening at multiple locations, so I called customer service and asked if they wanted to issue me a new dongle. They took down all the locations for investigation, but said they could "reset" the Speedpass device right now, through WiFi.

Really? A passive RFID device on my desk, with no power and no obvious communication capabilities to anything else can be "reset" by someone in India or Texas? Even if they could access my local WiFi network, they don't know my IP and how could they get through my firewall without my permission?

Anyone know how/if this can be done, or was I just fed the line that customer service uses to mollify complainants, something like the infamous "bug letter"?
