Drug Kingpin Escapes Mexican Super Max Prison

In what is seen as a humiliating blow to the Mexican government, Mexican drug lord El Chapo Guzman escaped from Mexico's maximum security Altiplano prison Saturday night. Under the guise of taking a shower, Guzman entered a mile long tunnel -- built from a construction site to his cell area -- and made good his escape. A massive manhunt has ensued. Guzman was facing as much as a four-hundred year sentence.

The leader of one of Mexico's bloodiest cartels -- the Sinaloa cartel, credited with literally thousands of murders among other crimes -- Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto had proclaimed Guzman's arrest in February 2014 as a major blow to Mexico's drug cartels and a major step in the restoring the rule of law in the country. At the time Pena said, if Guzman managed to escape custody (as he had during an earlier imprisonment), "It would be more than unfortunate, it would be unforgivable.”

Now Guzman has escaped.

Quote:

“Chapo’s escape is spectacular as a blatant example of the corruption and complicity inside the prison system,” said Eduardo Guerrero, a security analyst in Mexico. “The people who worked on the construction of the tunnel took their time to do it, calmly, with no worries, apparently. They equipped it perfectly, with everything necessary for a secure escape.” Link to news story
