Antibiotics, probiotics and gut health

I think I probably already know the answer to this, but...

I just started a course of antibiotics. I've tried of recent time to be very good to my microbiome lately by maintaining a pretty healthy diet. I'm loathe to undo all that good work by nuking my gut with clarithromycin just to clear up a non life threatening chest infection. However, I'm still not 100% certain it is just a chest infection. I've had a recurring pain in the chest for months now, I went to a GP yesterday and he said my chest sounds excellent (a shock considering how badly I've polluted my lungs with all kinds of nasty chemicals over the years), he asked whether I'd had any phlegm and because I could recall having coughed up a small amount of yellow phlegm a few weeks ago he decided to put me on antibiotics for a week and told me to come back if I was still experiencing the pain. So, long story short, despite my inclination to avoid antibiotics unless absolutely necessary (I am very concerned about the trend towards overprescription of the drugs, as well as their impact on my microbiome), I would like to make sure I can rule out having some more serious condition, i.e. a tumour on the lung or something - which considering my proclivity for inhaling toxic chemicals throughout my youthful years, is a distinct possibility.

My question is: Would eating lots of fermented foodstuffs and yoghurts and other "probiotic" foods reduce the impact of the antibiotics on my gut flora or would I just be chasing woo down the rabbit hole and wasting money in the process (my local deli sells small jars of fermented vegetables for about $20 a pop).
