Fine for Not Baking Cake for Gay Couple

"GRESHAM, Ore. – An Oregon bakery discriminated against a same-sex couple who wanted to purchase a wedding cake, the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries announced Monday.

The owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa bakery will have to pay the couple up to $150,000, BOLI spokesman Charlie Burr said. The exact amount will be determined at a hearing on March 10.

I don't think we should be fining businesses that don't want to offer services to gay couples. I say this as a total supporter of gay rights. I think it's counterproductive. After SCOTUS has issued a loving v. Virginia-type ruling, then yes, there should be fines, but it's too soon now. Societal acceptance of gays has moved so fast on this, that it's unfair to bankrupt a business for being just a few years behind the times (remember when Obama and Hillary supported "civil unions"?) Fines will cause a backlash and set back the cause of gay rights. People will just dig in their heals even more.

Just let the anti-discrimination court rulings build up until there's such a wealth of case-law, it would be suicidal for a business to not serve gay customers.
