I have a thought on the death penalty related to the Amanda Knox / Raffaele Sollecito thread and wanted to get a bit of feed back
With the Norfolk Four, some of the defendants were threatened with the death penalty if they did not name names. It caused several defendants to point out people who are innocent.
In an attempt to save one's like, you might try to find others, almost like a game of musical chairs in order to save one's life.
I have to wonder if the US legal system, if most of the prison sentences were simply not so long, if defendants might be able to be convinced (and not through coercion) to accept guilt.
