Can two Mint distros on USB access the same saved files?

I've got Windows on my desktop (32 bit) and laptop (64 bit). I've been playing around with some Linux distros on a multiboot USB Flash drive. I've settled on Mint as my favorite.

What I'd like to do is have both 32 and 64 bit versions of Mint on the Flash drive, but I'd like them to be able to access the same saved files. AFAIK, when you save something to persistent storage, only that particular distro is able to see it. Would partitioning the USB drive allow the two distros to access the data that's saved in the second partition?
