I don't know whether this has been reported elsewhere or how widely held this view is. I heard this on BBC Radio 5 Live this morning when they were interviewing a Russian about the situation in Ukraine. Most of the conversation was as you'd expect, the Russian claiming that the military action in Crimea is just to maintain law and order and that the current Kiev government are a bunch of Nazis who seized power by force and who are oppressing Russian-speaking Ukrainians.
The conversation move to whether aid agencies (I can't remember which ones were mentioned) would get access to Crimea and the interviewee stated as a matter of fact that "all aid agencies are funded by the CIA".
I can appreciate that there may be some non-governmental groups which are funded by security services but i'd like to believe that groups like the Red Cross/Red Crescent, Oxfam and MSF are free from such influence. This got me thinking about a couple of things:
The Russian people are being fed anti-Western propaganda and something which to my ears sounds akin to a conspiracy theory. No wonder that there is such support for action in Ukraine if the Russian people are being presented with such a warped view of the world.
This presupposes that we aren't the ones who are being fed a pack of lies by our media (and that the Russian version isn't accurate). Maybe the Ukrainians are all fascists, MSF is just a CIA front and Vladimir Putin is just trying to keep people safe.
I like to think that I'm not naive enough to take everything the media says at face value but I'm inclined to think that on a continuum from the BBC to Russia Today, the truth is between the two but much closer to the BBC.
edited to add.... I've asked the mods to fix the title
