I was reading a topic about enlightenment here. The poster was attempting to debunk the idea of enlightenment. It got me to thinking, are people afraid of enlightenment? Is there a fear of new age spirituality? I'm not saying that was the poster's motivation in making the topic, but it's possible. I know there are some overly religious people who are afraid of the new age philosophy, because they think it's witchcraft. They think engaging in such practices can result in possession of a demon, or cost them their salvation.
But why would the average person be afraid of such a thing? Now this is just me speaking, but it's all kind of spooky. Being the "observer" of the mind, and not even being a person..I mean, that's freaky stuff. This is what a lot of new age philosophy teaches. It would make life meaningless for me. If this were true, I would be like the character Mouse in The Matrix trying to find his way back to his old reality by betraying Neo. For them to even make a character like this makes me wonder if this is a universal concern. Then there's the fear of power. A lot of philosophies teach that we create our own reality. This can turn some people off though. You would think that's not the case, but some people seem to like being in the subservient role of life, and having all the power scares them..Lucky for these people that we don't really have much of a choice about what happens anyway.
