Policing For Profit: Florida Cops Make Millions Dealing Cocaine

Yes, you read the title correctly. Via Forbes:

It sounds like a plot ripped straight from Grand Theft Auto V. Police conduct “reverse” sting operations, posing as drug dealers to lure buyers with promises of cheap cocaine. Once the deals go down, cops bust the buyers, and using state and federal forfeiture laws, seize their cash and cars.



The good news is that thanks to the excellent work of investigative journalists, this particular case has been brought to light and the police have agreed to stop the entrapment of out of town buyers.



This is a prime example of why civil asset forfeiture, which is targeted at the ordinary rather than drug kingpins, has to be done away with. There's too much incentive for the authorities to abuse the system.
