Journalists can be lazy, overusing a phrase to the point where it becomes meaningless. I keep seeing claims that Common Core will focus less on "rote memorization," and I have some idea what this means, but not a lot.

The story to me reflects what math teachers should be doing, and in my experience are already doing, but that wouldn't leave the reporter much to say, so out comes the "rote memorization" meme.
Is there any other kind of memorization than "rote"? Why is it bad? Multiplication is too interesting a topic to teach solely by rote, but having the times tables down is necessary for becoming fluent at other arithmetic. Also I suspect memorization helps develop people's brains. To me, concepts vs. memorization is a false dichotomy. Any opinions out there?
