Is monosodium glutomate bad for you?

I've been looking in to this for a few days, but good information appears to be hard to come by. I can find woo-looking websites that talk about how it's a killer, and I can find woo-seeming science reporting about how it's good for you (according to one, ir raises blood pressure, and according to the other it lowers it). The best actual piece of research I have found has basically said "all the research is inconclusive and more research is required".

So, I'm wondering if there's anybody here who has any knowledge in this subject, and whether there's any good research or reliable sources I've missed.

And I should point out that I'm talking about long-term effects like blood pressure. I know there can be short term effects from ingesting too much, and these are listed by several medical bodies that I've found.

I'm wary of leaping to any conclusions without actual research. The presence of the word "sodium" within the name could lead me to believe that raising blood pressure is a credible effect, however chemicals with similar compositions can be very different to each other - hydrogen dioxide is fine to drink but dihydrogen dioxide is less so - so I'm not happy to use the presence of the word "sodium" as an indicator by itself.
