Why don't we create more doctors?

I wasn't sure whether to post this here, or the education forum or the society and culture forum. It kind of covers all three. It's a question that's been brewing in my mind a long time. So basically it's as the title says. Why not more doctors? If we want health care costs to fall, wouldn't a good place to begin be creating more doctors? We saturate the market with lawyers so much that it is now not uncommon to see them unemployed or working in 30k jobs barely getting by. Yet there is no such issue in the medical field. At least I don't think there is.. And it's not like we are short on demand of educated people that want to become doctors. I think we could educate 10 times the amount without diminishing the quality all that much. I know the cost might be high, but think of the amount of money spent educating students in the arts that come out with few employable skills. Surely some of the money allocated to that can go towards more doctors.

Anyway. In an age of talking about getting everyone health care I often wonder why this point doesn't seem to ever come up. Maybe it does and I am missing it or maybe I'm missing some obvious reasons. I'll just throw this out there.
